Hawkins, Indiana Chief of Police Nancy Wheeler arrives at work on November 7, 1983 to find single father Jonathan Byers in her office, reporting that his twelve-year-old daughter Joyce has vanished. The more Nancy looks into the disappearance, though, the clearer it becomes that there's much more going on in Hawkins than just one missing child...
When Joyce Byers goes missing, it's obvious to twelve-year-old Karen Harrington and Jim (not Jimmy) Hopper that they're going to have to be the ones to find her. There's something in the woods, though, and Karen and Hopper are going to have to figure out how to work together if they're going to get Joyce back - and live to see thirteen.
And seventeen-year-old Mike Harrington is helping Will Byers, Hawkins High's resident weirdo, search for his lost little sister when they both stumble across the stranger. She's got a shaved head, a number tattoo, and a gunshot wound.
She's also got superpowers.
Her name is Eleven. And she's here on a mission: rescue her own long-lost little sister, and burn the Hawkins National Lab to the ground.
